Emotions are at the core of every human value. Among all emotions, love and affection are the ones that we hold close to our hearts. This may be why we dedicate an entire week of February to the celebration of love. Valentine's Week is an annual celebration of love in which people engage with all pomp and grandeur. It is during this week that love finds unique expressions, existing bonds grow deeper, and promises are made till the end of eternity.

The fifth day of Valentine's week is celebrated as Promise Day, falling on 11 February. On this day, couples come together and make various promises to each other. It is a day of commitment to relationships, friendships, and family. Some people occasionally make promises to themselves for fulfilling personal goals.

No one is aware of the historicity of this day. No one knows why or what occasion led humanity to celebrate promises. Who can, after all, tell when the first promise was made? Was the first promise made by Shah Jahan that he would build a world wonder for his beloved Mumtaz? Or was it made by Salim to Anarkali that he would never forego their love?

Did Antony and Cleopatra make the first promise that they would meet and be together in the nether world? Or was it in the caves, when humans had no tools but emotions strong enough to be conveyed? Perhaps, such aspects of history would remain forever unknown to us as they have left no evidence for historians to tread.

Despite the mystery that surrounds this day, Promise Day has become quite popular in the present world. People worldwide celebrate Promise Day by acknowledging and respecting their commitments. The promise of evergreen love and staying together through thick and thin is made. Old promises are renewed or new ones are made.

Promise Day falls just two days before Valentine’s. The very chronology shows the significance that promises hold in a relationship, whether spoken or unspoken. It is essential that promises are not only made but are also kept and followed through. It is important to never renege on a promise made on Promise Day. This helps in building a stronger bond and maintaining trust.

Most promises are for eternal love and commitment, selflessness, sacrifices, and being together till the end of time. Promises made on promise day naturally become more meaningful and leave a lasting impact on relationships. The day is an opportunity to express dedication and love to one’s partner to make them feel special and loved.

People celebrate this day by giving cards to their loved ones. Certain traditions around Promise Day have started emerging. Often, couples gift rings to their partners, make promises and kiss their rings as a sign that they will hold on to the promise and the ring. Such promise rings also function as reminders of the promises made.

So, this Promise Day, make a promise to your partner, friends, or loved ones. Then exchange hugs and kisses for the next two days, until the clock turns, and it is time to celebrate Valentine’s.
