Ever since the inaugural edition of the IPL, Mumbai Indians had been a perpetual disappointment. Every year they fielded a star-studded lineup and every year, their team would fall apart. All of that changed when Ponting handed over the reins of the team to a young Rohit Sharma, who eventually led them to their first title in 2013. It seemed like they had finally broken the jinx.

However, the very next year their title defence fell apart. In the UAE leg, they lost five out of five games convincingly and they were written off by everyone. But as soon as they set foot in India, something clicked. MI came back from the dead to put themselves in the reckoning for playoffs.

In their way stood the Rajasthan Royals, who had the upper hand going into the game. They sat comfortably on 4th, two points ahead of Mumbai with s superior run rate. If MI were to go through, they’d require nothing short of a miracle.

Mumbai knew what they had to do- either beat the Royals by at least 42 runs batting first or chase down a target in the region of 130-201 in 87 balls to move up on net run rate.

One significant advantage for them was the fact that they were playing at their fortress, the Wankhede which had proved to be virtually unbreachable. Thankfully for them, they had won the toss and decided to chase, as any sensible team in the situation would’ve done.

RR put up a decent total of 189 on the board thanks to Samson-Nair’s early onslaught and the finishing touches were provided by the duo of Faulkner-Hodge, who had been severely under-utilised up to this point. What in ordinary circumstances would be a chaseable total was made nigh impossible thanks to the terms and conditions that came attached with it.

But as Pollard had said before the match, MI came out all guns blazing. In the first over itself, Lendl Simmons deflated Faulkner by smashing him for three fours, while old foe-turned friend Michael Hussey sent his first ball into the stands.

Simmons though, played one shot too many and that led to his wicket in the next over itself; Hussey followed suit soon after. Pollard hit his second ball into a spectator’s palms and the next into a fielder’s. Rohit took where others had left but he too ran out of steam soon. 

Cory Anderson on the other hand was playing a gem of an innings. Coming down at 3, he had been chipping away at the target while others around him fell like nine pins. When all hope seemed lost, he became Mumbai’s saviour and in Rayudu, he found an able partner.

Together, they launched an onslaught of a magnitude seldom seen before. From 108-4 after 9.2 overs, they took Mumbai to 181-4 in the 14th over.

Now the drama began. The equation for MI was clear- score 9 off 3 or go home. Cory could only manage a single off the first. Rayudu flicked a full toss over long leg for six. With 2 from 1 needed for qualification, Rayudu mishit the ball to a fielder and scampered through for one run but failed to reach back in time for the second.

The Royals’ dugout began to celebrate because they thought the game was over and even though they had lost, the 4th spot was theirs. Now came a dagger to their heart- because their scores had been tied, MI could still theoretically go through on a superior run rate provided that they hit a boundary off the next ball.

Aditya Tare, facing his first ball, was sweating buckets. This was the moment that could potentially define the rest of his career. Faulkner steamed into bowl; a full toss on leg stump was launched over square leg for a six by Tare. He threw his bat and launched into a euphoric run, pulling his shirt before eventually tucking it over his head (which he was fined for, but he wouldn’t have cared).

Shane Watson couldn’t believe they had let this slip. Even the usually composed Dravid threw his cap on the ground in frustration. The MI dugout, on the other hand, was jubilant. Although they lost the next match itself, they had cemented their names in the history books of the IPL. For years to come, this match became a trademark of the celebration that is the Indian Premier League and an ode to its sheer unpredictability.

What had seemed set in stone a week ago now hung in balance- many had declared Royals’s march into the playoffs inevitable but a topsy turvy week saw turned their last game vs the Mumbai Indians into a virtual knockout. The events that transpired next at the Wankhede immortalised the match in the pantheon of greatest IPL matches forever.
