That's exactly what happened when the Royal Challengers Bangalore squared up against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Sharjah.

Due to the Lok Sabha elections of 2014, the first half of IPL was forced to shift to UAE because of security concerns. This made it a tournament of two contrasting halves- the perfect example being the Kolkata Knight Riders themselves.

The KKR had been painfully average when the tournament began. Despite having multiple matchwinners on their side, they had failed to come together and play as a coherent group.

On a flat pitch in the ground as small as Sharjah, they could only muster up 150. The one time they looked in control was when Lynn was smashing Muralidharan for fun, but as soon as he holed out to ABD at long-off,  KKR began to fade out of the match.

RCB, on the other hand, looked like a force to reckon with. They had stamped their authority over two of their opponents with minimum fuss and looked set to do the same to KKR.

Parthiv Patel and Yogesh Takawale played at the appropriate tempo, rotating the strike with the occasional boundary. A no-risk approach had put their team in a comfortable position, which they weren't shaken out of even though the duo got out in quick succession at a score of 67.

Kohli was joined in the middle by Yuvraj and the two built on the foundation that had been laid down by their openers. While Kohli looked comfortable, Yuvraj began to bog the team down. As he failed to put the bat onto the ball, KKR began to crawl back into the game. Even then, the required rate of scoring never got out of hand.

When Kohli got out, RCB needed 29 runs from 25 balls, a fairly achievable target. However, Yuvraj’s misery continued as he farmed the strike instead of ABD, much to the chagrin of RCB.

The one time he managed to time the ball, he hit it straight into Yusuf Pathan’s lap. Even then, the game was RCB’s to lose; and that's exactly what happened.

With 9 need from 6, Vinay Kumar bowled 3 excellent balls, giving away just 3. The fourth ball he bowled was short of length and De Villiers hit it sweetly towards deep-midwicket. He thought that he'd once again stolen the game for RCB, but he couldn't have been more wrong.

Chris Lynn was the one fielding there and he began to inch his way backwards, but slipped; despite that, he somehow straightened his back, stood on one knee and lept to catch the ball. To cushion the momentum, he used his elbow as an anchor and with all his might, managed to stay inside.

The match was set in stone from here. RCB couldn't brush it off and fell short by two runs. They had lost from a winning position as they had many times before and many times after and their season fell off the rails. Although KKR went on to win that season, they had to wait for their turnaround just yet. 

However, Lynn had just pulled a bunny out of his hat from nowhere and handed them two important points (which made all the difference later on), despite being just another last-ditch buy at the auctions for them.
