They call him Mr. Perfectionist - but that wasn’t always the case. For Aamir Khan, born on the 14th of March, 1965, films would be a struggle till the latter part of his life - and then he would establish himself as one of the most popular and influential actors of Indian cinema.

He initially acted in the FTII documentaries, and got offered a film called Holi in 1984, based on ragging. Over there, his role was deemed insignificant and ‘lacking finesse’. It did not garner views, but it got him noticed. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak would star him in a lead role, and there not only did it get him success, but made his acting template the standard for Hindi romantic cinema in the 1990s.

After some commercial failures, he would be back on track with Dil, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Rangeela, and even unsuccessful in its time, but later a classic, Andaz Apna Apna. Raja Hindustani, one of the highest grossing films, and Sarfarosh where his role was critically appreciated, won him more accolades.

But his magnum opus would be Lagaan, which he himself produced and starred in.

National Film Awards, and nomination at the Academy Awards, would lead to a string of movies on colonial and Indian issues - like Mangal Pandey, and then Rang De Basanti, a BAFTA nominee.

Aamir Khan Productions, his company would bring out movies like Taare Zameen Par, but more was to come. Another cult hit, Three Idiots, in 2009, became the highest grossing Bollywood movie of its time - and became a success in East Asian markets of Japan and China. Winning awards after awards, in India and East Asia, this movie also began the opening of the Chinese market to Indian films.

Since then, he has continued his career with numerous ‘highest grossing films’ of their release times like Dhoom 3, PK, Dangal, and continues to work on it. He has also worked for numerous humanitarian and social causes, famously the Indian tv show Satyamev Jayate, and other initiatives like education, child nutrition and clean water access.
